Circuit Zandvoort will host its final Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix in 2026, following a decision by the event’s promoter. The circuit, a favourite among many drivers, will conclude its current tenure on the Formula 1 calendar after the upcoming season.

The promoter confirmed in December 2024 that the 2026 edition would be the last, after agreeing to a one-year contract extension that secured its place through the 2026 season. The 2026 Dutch Grand Prix will also mark the debut of a Sprint event at the Zandvoort circuit.

The decision to withdraw from the calendar beyond 2026 stems from rising operational costs and the increasing pressure of Formula 1’s European circuit rotation system. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali noted the absence of government financial backing for the Zandvoort event.

Max Verstappen, a prominent figure in the sport, has addressed the impending departure of his home race. He stated his intention to continue driving at Circuit Zandvoort long after its Formula 1 exit.

Verstappen views the circuit as an active part of his racing life, suggesting its use for other racing series or private track days. He also indicated that he holds no ‘extra motivation’ for the final F1 race, maintaining his consistent performance approach.

Lando Norris also expressed regret regarding Zandvoort’s removal from the schedule. He described the circuit as a ‘fun race’ and a ‘cool track’ due to its unique and exciting layout.

‘It’s a shame because it’s a fun race. It’s just a cool track. Since I’ve driven there in Formula 3, it was one of the most exciting, different layouts that you have on the calendar, and in Formula 1 it’s a pretty crazy track. So, it’s a shame.’

The Dutch Grand Prix made its return to the Formula 1 calendar in 2021 after a 35-year absence. This revival was largely attributed to the surging popularity of Max Verstappen, who has secured three victories at the circuit since its comeback.

Looking ahead to the 2027 Formula 1 calendar, several changes are anticipated. The Portuguese Grand Prix is set to return on a two-year contract, effectively replacing Zandvoort. The Turkish Grand Prix will also rejoin the schedule.

Furthermore, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will enter a bi-annual rotation with the Belgian Grand Prix from 2027. Madrid will host the Spanish Grand Prix from 2026, taking over as the primary Spanish venue.
