Former Alpine and Aston Martin team principal Otmar Szafnauer has revealed methods he used to prevent sensitive conversations from being recorded by Netflix’s ‘Drive to Survive’ documentary crew. Szafnauer explained that he would sometimes resort to speaking Romanian to circumvent the ever-present microphones.

This tactic was employed to maintain confidentiality during critical discussions on the pit wall or within the team’s garage. The Romanian-American executive, who was born in Romania, could communicate privately with any personnel who also understood the language, ensuring strategic details remained internal.

In a recent podcast appearance, Szafnauer also mentioned a more direct, physical method of avoiding being recorded during his time leading teams. He described how he would occasionally place a piece of tape over his forehead on the pit wall as a clear, non-verbal signal that he was not to be filmed or recorded at that moment.

According to Szafnauer, this worked more effectively than any non-disclosure agreement. The measure was deemed necessary to protect team interests, particularly when discussing car performance, driver feedback, or confidential strategic planning during high-pressure race weekends.

The presence of the Netflix production has been a consistent factor for teams to manage since the series began. While ‘Drive to Survive’ is widely credited with boosting Formula 1’s global popularity, it has also created a challenge for teams balancing media access with the need to protect proprietary information.

Szafnauer’s disclosures offer insight into the operational realities for team principals in the modern era of the sport. The need to provide content for the series often runs counter to the inherently secretive nature of competitive motorsport.
