Max Verstappen’s management has engaged in preliminary discussions with McLaren regarding potential future opportunities beyond his current Red Bull Racing contract. These talks are understood to be exploratory, assessing the long-term landscape of the driver market for the 2027 and 2028 seasons.

McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella recently acknowledged the ongoing speculation linking Verstappen to the Woking-based outfit. Stella stated that while Verstappen is a highly regarded driver, McLaren remains focused on its existing driver lineup and the development of its 2026 and 2027 cars.

Red Bull Racing has simultaneously worked to maintain stability within its technical department. The team successfully secured the continued services of Paul Monaghan, their Chief Engineer, earlier this season. Monaghan committed to a new multi-year agreement, ensuring continuity in a key engineering role.

Christian Horner remains the Team Principal and CEO of Red Bull Racing as of August 2026. An internal investigation regarding allegations against him concluded in early 2024, with Horner cleared of wrongdoing and continuing in his leadership position.

Adrian Newey, who departed Red Bull Racing in early 2025, has since joined Aston Martin Aramco F1 Team as Chief Technical Officer, effective from early 2026. He is actively involved in the development of the Aston Martin AMR26 car, designed for the new 2026 technical regulations.

Former F1 driver Johnny Herbert recently questioned whether Newey’s ‘magic touch’ would be immediately evident with the AMR26, given the significant regulatory changes for the upcoming season. Herbert’s comments have generated discussion among F1 observers.

Verstappen has consistently reiterated his stance that he does not intend to continue racing in Formula 1 into his late thirties or early forties. He has expressed a desire to pursue other interests once his commitment or enjoyment for the sport wanes.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli is currently leading the 2026 FIA Formula 2 Championship, demonstrating strong performances throughout the season. Verstappen has previously indicated that he sees something special in the young Italian driver.

Johnny Herbert also recently praised Isack Hadjar’s performance in Formula 2, suggesting Hadjar possesses significant potential. Herbert’s remarks were interpreted by some as potentially downplaying Verstappen’s unique talent, leading to further debate.
