Max Verstappen has commented on speculation surrounding Fernando Alonso’s Formula 1 future, suggesting the Spaniard’s age makes a potential exit decision ‘easier’ for him. Alonso, who turned 45 last month, is currently negotiating his contract beyond the 2026 season with Aston Martin.
Verstappen expressed his sympathy for Alonso’s current position, with Aston Martin struggling at the rear of the grid this season. The two-time world champion has only secured one point from 11 race weekends so far in 2026.
The Dutchman stated that Alonso ‘doesn’t deserve to be P21’ and should be competing within the top five positions. Verstappen’s remarks highlight the challenging circumstances faced by the veteran driver.
Alonso’s current contract with Aston Martin expires at the end of the 2026 campaign. Despite the team’s performance, he has indicated that his decision regarding 2027 will primarily hinge on the sport’s regulations and his enjoyment of driving.
He has been critical of the new rules introduced this year, particularly concerning the electrified power units, a sentiment shared by Verstappen. Alonso stated that driving the current cars in certain circuits is not what he envisions for his future.
‘My decision for next year is more about the rules,’ Alonso added. ‘Driving these cars in places like Spa or Silverstone last race is not what I’m dreaming of for my future. So we’ll see.’
Reports from early August 2026 suggest Alonso is close to signing a contract extension with Aston Martin through 2027, with an announcement potentially coming at the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix. Some reports even indicate he is seeking an extension until 2028.
Adrian Newey, who joined Aston Martin earlier this year, is reportedly confident that Alonso will remain with the team. Newey views retaining Alonso as a top priority for the Silverstone-based squad.
Aston Martin’s 2026 season has been difficult, but the team introduced a significant upgrade package at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Honda is also set to bring an upgraded engine to the Dutch Grand Prix.
Verstappen, at 28 years old, also holds reservations about the current regulations. However, he acknowledges his situation differs from Alonso’s, given his earlier career stage.
The Red Bull driver mentioned his ability to ‘easily stop’ racing, but affirmed his love for the sport. He is currently working to adapt to the present conditions, despite not fully favouring them.
Alonso’s reported salary demands for an extension are around €40 million annually, an increase from his current €30 million. This figure reflects his standing and experience in Formula 1.
