Former Formula 1 Digital Presenter and current IndyCar lead commentator Will Buxton has positioned Max Verstappen within a unique category of drivers. Buxton, now with Fox Sports, has consistently highlighted Verstappen’s exceptional talent throughout his career.

Buxton previously described Verstappen as ‘lightning quick’ and ‘ruthless on track,’ while also noting his character as a ‘lovely guy’ away from the circuit. He stated that even rivals acknowledge Verstappen’s unparalleled ability on his best days.

The British journalist has long held the view that Verstappen was destined for Formula 1 success and a world championship from a young age. This assessment underscores the Dutchman’s natural aptitude for racing.

Verstappen, a four-time Formula 1 World Champion, is currently contracted to Red Bull until the conclusion of the 2028 season. His agreement includes a performance-based exit clause.

This clause permits him to depart the team if he is not positioned within the top two of the Drivers’ Championship by the summer break. As of August 2026, Verstappen is sixth in the standings with 109 points after 11 rounds, making the exit clause active.

Red Bull is reportedly engaged in negotiations to offer Verstappen a new contract, potentially extending his tenure until the end of 2029. This proposed deal would include a salary increase but would remove the existing exit clause.

However, reports indicate Verstappen is reluctant to relinquish this clause. He may prefer a shorter, one-year extension to evaluate Red Bull’s performance, particularly concerning their 2026 power unit development.

The 2026 season has presented challenges for Red Bull, leading to questions regarding Verstappen’s long-term commitment. Former Haas Team Principal Guenther Steiner suggests Red Bull retains an advantage due to the limited number of superior teams available.

Speculation also includes Mercedes, with suggestions they have identified a ‘next Max Verstappen,’ and McLaren as potential future destinations for the Dutch driver.

Verstappen himself has articulated a distinctive driving philosophy, noting he does not consistently push at ‘102 per cent.’ He attributes his consistent feel at the wheel to his diverse racing experience from a young age.

Even his rivals have to take their hat off and say on his day, we just can’t do what Max does.

Buxton’s comments reinforce Verstappen’s standing as a generational talent, a perspective that gains further relevance amid the ongoing discussions surrounding his Red Bull contract and the team’s current performance trajectory.
