Kimi Antonelli currently faces the highest risk of incurring a grid penalty during the 2026 Formula 1 season. The championship leader has reached the maximum allocation for four critical power unit components. Antonelli is at the limit for his Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), Exhaust (EX), Energy Store (ES), and Control Electronics (CE).

Should Antonelli require an additional unit of any of these components, he will receive an immediate 10-place grid penalty. This situation places significant pressure on Mercedes’ power unit management for the remainder of the season. The FIA’s technical delegates rigorously track the usage of each power unit component for every driver throughout the season.

Ahead of the 2026 season, drivers were allocated four Internal Combustion Engines, four Turbochargers, four Exhausts, three MGU-Ks, three Energy Stores, and three Control Electronics. Exceeding these allocations results in penalties. Teams are required to submit detailed reports on component changes, which are then cross-referenced with telemetry data.

A first breach of allocation incurs a 10-place grid penalty, with each subsequent offence for additional components costing five further grid spots. The current allocation is set to reduce by one unit for each component in the 2027 season, intensifying the pressure on component management.

Several drivers have already incurred penalties this season. Isack Hadjar received a 30-place grid penalty for the Belgian Grand Prix after exceeding his allocation on multiple engine components. This strategic penalty aims to provide him with fresh components for the rest of the campaign.

Lando Norris, Lance Stroll, Fernando Alonso, and Carlos Sainz have also taken penalties earlier in the season. For these drivers, any further component breaches will result in a five-place grid drop per additional part used. Strategic grid penalties, often taken at circuits where overtaking is more feasible, allow teams to introduce fresh components.

Beyond Antonelli, other drivers are also at their component limits. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, both driving for Ferrari, have reached their maximum allocation for MGU-K, ES, and CE. The Cadillac and Haas drivers are in a similar position regarding these specific components.

Alex Albon and Franco Colapinto have both reached their limit for the Energy Store and Control Electronics. Nico Hulkenberg cannot use another MGU-K without incurring a penalty, while his teammate Gabriel Bortoleto has hit the limit for MGU-K and Control Electronics.

During the 2026 season, certain power unit manufacturers, including Mercedes and Cadillac, have reportedly encountered unexpected reliability challenges with specific components. This has contributed to increased usage rates across their respective factory and customer teams.

Conversely, five drivers currently remain clear of any component limits. Arvid Lindblad, Pierre Gasly, Liam Lawson, Max Verstappen, and Oscar Piastri have not yet reached the maximum allocation for any of their power unit elements. This provides them with greater flexibility for the remainder of the season.
