George Russell is reportedly reminded of a significant past incident, stating he ‘heard it twenty minutes later’. This reflection refers to the events of the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix, where a critical pit stop error impacted his race outcome.

During the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix, Russell was deputising for Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes. He demonstrated strong performance throughout the event, leading a significant portion of the race in Bahrain.

A pivotal moment occurred during a safety car period when Mercedes called both Russell and Valtteri Bottas into the pits. A radio communication issue led to Bottas’s front tyres being mistakenly fitted to Russell’s car.

This error forced Russell to make an immediate second pit stop on the subsequent lap to rectify the tyre mix-up. The unscheduled stop caused him to drop significantly down the order, severely impacting his race position.

Further compounding his challenges, Russell later experienced a slow puncture during the race. This necessitated another pit stop, which further diminished his prospects of securing a maiden Formula 1 victory.

Following the race, Russell publicly expressed his disbelief, stating that a potential maiden win had been ‘taken away from us twice’. Despite the setbacks, he managed to secure his first career F1 points in that event.

The FIA stewards investigated the incident and subsequently issued Mercedes a €20,000 fine for the tyre mix-up. They cited mitigating circumstances, including the radio issue and the team’s swift rectification of the error.

The incident generated considerable discussion within the sport, including unsubstantiated conspiracy theories regarding deliberate team intervention. These theories were later dismissed by various commentators.

Mercedes has faced other operational challenges in recent seasons, including a front wing adjustment error during Russell’s pit stop at the 2026 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. This highlights the ongoing critical nature of pit stop precision in Formula 1.
