Speculation within the Formula 1 paddock suggests that Oscar Piastri may not be receiving equal opportunities under McLaren’s ‘Papaya Rules’ during the current 2026 season. This sentiment emerges amidst ongoing discussions regarding the team’s internal racing protocols.
The ‘Papaya Rules’ serve as McLaren’s internal directive, primarily instructing drivers to maintain clean racing and avoid contact with their teammate. This framework is intended to ensure fair competition and equal chances for both drivers.
However, the application of these rules has previously generated controversy. During the 2025 season, particularly at the Italian Grand Prix, Piastri was instructed to yield position to Lando Norris following a slow pit stop for Norris.
Further incidents, including a collision initiated by Norris in Singapore and a subsequent tag by Piastri in Austin, also brought the ‘Papaya Rules’ under scrutiny. The perceived fairness of McLaren’s driver management even prompted questions from the Australian parliament.
Despite past criticism, McLaren leadership has consistently reaffirmed its commitment to driver equality. Team Principal Andrea Stella and CEO Zak Brown have stated that fairness, integrity, and equal opportunities remain fundamental principles for both Norris and Piastri in 2026.
Stella confirmed a comprehensive review of the team’s racing approach for the current season. He indicated that while core principles are maintained, the execution would be ‘streamlined’ to prevent previous ‘headaches’ caused by the rules.
Piastri himself acknowledged that the ‘Papaya Rules’ are not being abandoned but are being ‘sharpened, polished’. He expressed confidence in the team’s ability to refine their approach and expects a fair opportunity.
The 2026 season has seen McLaren start on the back foot, grappling with a new Mercedes power unit and downforce deficiencies in the MCL40. Lando Norris, the reigning 2025 World Champion, currently sits fifth in the Drivers’ Championship, with Piastri in seventh.
F1 pundit David Croft recently cautioned Piastri to elevate his performance to match Norris’s pace. Croft suggested that if Piastri cannot consistently perform at that level, McLaren might need to prioritize Norris to maximize championship points.
Conversely, Croft had earlier in March 2026 tipped Piastri as a potential World Champion for the current season, citing his consistent improvement.
Stella remains optimistic about Piastri’s prospects for the latter half of 2026. He noted that Piastri is still adapting to the new, low-grip 2026 cars and that significant work is underway to enhance his performance.
Piastri’s contract with McLaren reportedly extends until the end of 2028, with Norris also secured until at least the end of 2026, likely 2027. This contractual stability counters any immediate speculation regarding driver changes.
Piastri has voiced confidence in McLaren’s capacity for mid-season turnarounds, drawing parallels to previous seasons where the team significantly improved its performance.
