Andrea Kimi Antonelli has demonstrated significant progression in his second Formula 1 season, currently leading the Drivers’ Standings. The Italian driver, competing for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, has secured six victories across the opening 11 rounds of the 2026 campaign.
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has noted Antonelli’s rapid development and maturity throughout the current season. Wolff stated that Antonelli has become a ‘different young man’ over the past few months.
During a practice session at the Hungarian Grand Prix today, August 10, 2026, Antonelli exhibited a notable level of composure. When struggling to set a fast lap on soft tyres, he opted to pit and focus on long runs, rather than pushing for an immediate lap time.
Wolff highlighted this decision as an example of Antonelli’s unusual maturity for a driver in only his second year in the sport. He emphasized Antonelli’s ability to process information and execute strategy effectively.
“His capability of taking information in, processing it, and executing it is outstanding. It’s the best I’ve seen from any young driver in terms of the growing process going so quickly.”
Antonelli joined the Mercedes-Benz Junior Programme in April 2019 at the age of 12. His junior career included multiple karting titles before a rapid ascent through single-seater categories.
He secured both the Italian F4 Championship and ADAC F4 Championship in 2022, followed by the Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine (FRECA) title in 2023. Antonelli then skipped Formula 3, moving directly to Formula 2 in 2024.
Antonelli made his Formula 1 debut with Mercedes in 2025, replacing Lewis Hamilton. His 2026 season has seen him become the youngest driver to achieve three consecutive F1 wins and the youngest to lead the World Championship.
