Reigning Formula 1 World Champion Lando Norris has expressed a strong desire to compete in the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans. This ambition aligns with McLaren’s confirmed entry into the World Endurance Championship (WEC) Hypercar class from 2027.
Norris, who secured his maiden F1 title in 2025 and races with the number one in the current 2026 season, has consistently voiced his interest in endurance racing. He views it as a significant challenge beyond Formula 1.
McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown confirmed discussions with Norris regarding a potential Le Mans outing. Brown stated that both Norris and Oscar Piastri have indicated their interest in the iconic French endurance race.
The Woking-based squad is preparing its Hypercar programme for a 2027 WEC debut, which includes participation in the Le Mans 24 Hours. This development provides Norris with a direct pathway to his endurance aspirations.
Norris has already had the opportunity to sample McLaren’s LMDh machine during a demonstration run at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. This experience further fueled speculation about his future competitive involvement.
The F1 champion acknowledged that fitting a Le Mans programme into an increasingly demanding Formula 1 calendar presents a challenge. Schedule clashes between F1 Grands Prix and Le Mans have been a common occurrence.
Norris is currently under a multi-year contract with McLaren, securing his position with the team until at least the end of the 2027 season. Any external racing participation would require team approval.
While Norris previously showed interest in the Indy 500, he has more recently clarified his stance. He stated that competing in IndyCar is ‘not my thing’ and he has ‘no interest in doing it’ for real.
His focus for non-F1 competition remains firmly on endurance events, with the 24 Hours of Le Mans standing out as his primary target. He previously competed in the Daytona 24 Hours in 2018.
Norris emphasized his desire to ‘try other things’ in racing, highlighting his passion for motorsport beyond the Formula 1 circuit. Le Mans represents a significant goal in this broader ambition.
