Max Verstappen has called upon the Dutch government to increase investment in national motorsport. This appeal follows the confirmation that the Dutch Grand Prix at Circuit Zandvoort will conclude after the 2026 season. The event’s promoter opted against a further extension, citing financial challenges and rising costs.

The 2026 Dutch Grand Prix, scheduled for August 21-23, will mark the final Formula 1 race at Zandvoort for the foreseeable future. This edition will feature a Sprint race for the first time at the circuit.

Verstappen’s success has been a primary driver behind the Grand Prix’s revival in 2021 and its subsequent popularity. He has secured three victories at his home race.

The Red Bull driver emphasized that the future popularity of motorsport in the Netherlands is not solely dependent on his career. He highlighted the necessity of new talent emerging to reach Formula 1 to maintain public interest.

Verstappen pointed to Germany as a cautionary example, where Formula 1’s popularity has significantly declined. Germany has not hosted a Grand Prix since 2020, despite its strong automotive industry and historical presence of multiple German drivers on the grid.

Factors contributing to Germany’s motorsport downturn include economic and ideological reasons, a lack of political support, environmental concerns, and the shift to pay-TV broadcasting for Formula 1.

Verstappen contrasted this with Spain, which he cited as a country demonstrating strong government support for motorsport. This includes backing for drivers and circuits, contributing to a consistent pipeline of talent.

While Spain has shown commitment to motorsport, including government support for events like the FIA Motorsport Games, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya also sought urgent government assistance in 2022 to secure its F1 future. A new Madrid F1 race is set to commence in 2026.

The Dutch government has historically maintained a stance against providing financial aid for the Grand Prix. Officials have stated that such contributions are not a justifiable use of taxpayer money and do not align with policies promoting physical exercise for children.

Nyck de Vries, another Dutch driver, continues to be active in motorsport in 2026. He serves as a permanent simulator driver for McLaren and competes in Formula E for Mahindra Racing. De Vries also races in the World Endurance Championship for Toyota, having won the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year.

‘That’s not in my hands,’ Verstappen stated regarding the responsibility for maintaining the sport’s popularity. ‘Popularity depends mainly on the talent coming up, and hopefully someone from that group will make it to Formula 1. Because that’s what creates the biggest buzz. Chance always plays a role. Just look at Germany in the past.’
