Max Verstappen’s recent performances have drawn significant attention from Formula 1 analysts, who note his exceptional ability to extract results despite Red Bull Racing’s ongoing struggles in the 2026 season. The team is currently navigating a challenging period, with the RB22 car presenting consistent technical limitations.
Red Bull Racing sits fourth in the Constructors’ Championship after 11 rounds, a notable departure from their previous dominant seasons. Verstappen himself is positioned sixth in the Drivers’ Championship, trailing leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli by 110 points.
The RB22 has been plagued by inherent balance issues, including pronounced oversteer and mid-corner understeer, alongside a narrow operating window. Technical Director Pierre Wache has acknowledged these limitations, which can be exacerbated by minor track condition changes or car damage.
Verstappen has openly voiced his frustrations over team radio, notably describing the car as ‘completely ed’ during the Hungarian Grand Prix. He has also reported persistent aerodynamic issues, shift struggles, and rear-wing troubles throughout recent races.
The 2026 season marks Red Bull’s debut as a full works team, developing its own power unit in collaboration with Ford. Despite the FIA initially rating their engine as a benchmark, the team has encountered reliability concerns and mechanical gremlins.
Despite these car deficiencies, Verstappen delivered a second-place finish at the Hungarian Grand Prix, starting from fourth on the grid due to penalties. He characterized the race as ‘one of the hardest’ of the current season, underscoring the effort required.
Pundits have highlighted Verstappen’s capacity for ‘overperformance’ in difficult circumstances. Robert Doornbos, a former F1 driver and analyst, remarked on Verstappen’s daring maneuvers, such as a bold move at the Dutch Grand Prix, noting his ability to save the car from potential collisions.
‘If you can save it, in that way! You keep it steady, then you hit the dirt and the fact that he then shoots up and holds it, is truly all in. This gentleman is taking risks.’
Red Bull’s development efforts for the RB22 have been impacted by budget cap constraints. The team has introduced 36 upgrades this season to address initial deficits, but Team Principal Laurent Mekies indicated that further upgrades may be reduced to prioritize the 2027 car development.
Verstappen himself has stated that the team needs to find more overall performance and resolve issues that cause performance loss over a race weekend. This ongoing challenge contrasts with his consistent individual efforts.
