Flavio Briatore has publicly questioned Alpine’s current results in the 2026 Formula 1 season, despite the team’s improved performance. His direct inquiry, ‘Why are we not winning?’, underscores a clear demand for race victories. Briatore’s comments reflect high expectations for the Enstone-based squad.
Briatore, who returned to Alpine as an Executive Advisor in 2024, holds a significant role within the team, effectively acting as de facto team principal. He has been granted extensive authority over personnel decisions.
Earlier this year, in January 2026, Briatore set ambitious targets for Alpine, stating that ‘this year is not for excuses’ and predicting a ‘fantastic’ season. He has consistently emphasised the need for the team to translate its resources into tangible results.
Alpine has shown a notable improvement in the 2026 Constructors’ Championship, currently holding fifth position as of April. This marks a significant step forward compared to their challenging 2025 campaign.
A key factor in this upturn is the team’s strategic switch to Mercedes engines and gearboxes for the current season. This change has been widely credited for enhancing the car’s performance and reliability.
Despite the improved pace, Briatore’s recent remarks indicate a desire to convert this potential into actual race wins. He stated in early August that he believes ‘in 2026 it is possible to be winning races and in 2027 fighting for the championship’.
The team’s driver line-up for 2026 consists of Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto. Colapinto was confirmed for the season in November 2025, having been promoted mid-season in 2025.
Briatore had previously acknowledged Colapinto’s development, noting his increased consistency in recent races after an initial period of inexperience. The focus remains on maximising the performance from both drivers.
The strategic decision to abandon the in-house Renault power unit for Mercedes engines was made to close the performance gap, with Briatore asserting that ‘the French want to win, and with our engine, we can’t do it’.
Briatore’s mandate extends to a complete restructuring of the team, with a strong emphasis on the technical side to continuously improve the car. He maintains a clear vision for Alpine to become a consistently winning force in Formula 1.
