Max Verstappen has pointed to his family life as a crucial element in managing the intense pressures of his Formula 1 career. The driver emphasizes that his time at home with partner Kelly Piquet and their children provides a necessary balance.

Verstappen explains that once he returns home, his focus shifts entirely away from the racetrack. This mental separation is vital for his ability to recharge between Grand Prix weekends, regardless of the previous race’s outcome.

He has adjusted his travel schedule for race weekends, often arriving later than in previous years. This change is a direct result of wanting to maximize time with his family, particularly with his young daughter, Lily, who was born in 2025.

The Red Bull driver notes that fatherhood has provided him with a new sense of perspective. This role, along with being a ‘bonus dad’ to Piquet’s daughter Penelope, has helped him mature and find a calm foundation away from the sport.

‘For me, racing is fun, it’s great, but it’s also a nice thing to be home.’

This ability to disconnect is something Verstappen considers essential for longevity in Formula 1. He believes a driver cannot remain fully focused on racing 24/7 without risking burnout, highlighting the importance of a normal life outside the paddock.

In a recent interview, Kelly Piquet confirmed Verstappen’s character as a ‘homebody’ who enjoys family life. She noted that his ability to get the job done on track and then return to a normal home environment is a key aspect of their partnership.

Verstappen has stated that leaving home for races will likely become more difficult as his daughter gets older. He recalls his own childhood experiences of his father, Jos, leaving for races and understands the challenge that lies ahead.

Ultimately, the driver sees his private life not as a distraction, but as a fundamental component of his professional success. It allows him to reset mentally and maintain the focus required to compete at the highest level of motorsport.
