Aston Martin’s objective to appoint Jonathan Wheatley as team principal has become the focus of paddock discussion following a difficult start to the 2026 season. The move is intended to allow current principal, Adrian Newey, to return his focus to technical matters.
The Silverstone-based team’s interest has intensified after Wheatley’s unexpected and immediate departure from his role as team principal at Audi in March of this year. Audi confirmed Wheatley was leaving for ‘personal reasons’ after only a few races.
This development has opened a path for Wheatley to join Aston Martin, which underwent its own management restructuring in late 2025. That change saw Adrian Newey take on the team principal role, with his predecessor Andy Cowell moving to Chief Strategy Officer.
The plan appears to be for Newey to step back from the day-to-day operational leadership, a role for which Wheatley is considered a prime candidate. His extensive experience as Sporting Director at Red Bull is highly valued.
During nearly two decades at Red Bull, Wheatley was a key figure in their operational success, contributing to multiple world championships. He was instrumental in developing their pit crew into one of the fastest in Formula 1 history.
Wheatley had originally left Red Bull at the end of the 2024 season to lead the new Audi F1 project. His early release from that contract has now made him available on the market much sooner than anticipated.
However, the transition to Aston Martin may not be immediate. The terms of his departure from Audi could include a significant period of gardening leave, potentially delaying his start. Aston Martin has not officially confirmed the appointment.
The team has stated it will not engage in media speculation regarding its senior leadership. Despite this, the move is widely anticipated within the sport as a logical step for both Wheatley and Aston Martin’s long-term project.
