Legendary McLaren mechanic Indy Lall has identified Kimi Räikkönen as the Formula 1 champion who ultimately eluded the Woking-based team. Lall, a veteran of over four decades with McLaren, believes Räikkönen’s potential for a title with them was significant.
Räikkönen competed for McLaren from 2002 to 2006, securing second place in the Drivers’ Championship twice during his tenure. His time at the team was marked by both exceptional speed and persistent reliability issues with the Mercedes-powered cars.
In the 2003 season, Räikkönen finished a mere two points behind Michael Schumacher in the championship standings. This narrow margin highlighted the competitive pace of the McLaren package, despite its mechanical vulnerabilities.
The 2005 season further underscored this dynamic. Räikkönen drove the McLaren MP4-20, a car renowned for its outright speed but also its fragility. This combination led to several missed opportunities for championship points.
During the 2005 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, Räikkönen retired from the lead due to a driveshaft failure after just nine laps. Later that season, at the Nürburgring, a flat-spotted tyre led to suspension failure on the final lap, costing him a victory.
Engine failures were a recurring problem, with Räikkönen incurring multiple grid penalties in 2005, including one at the Japanese Grand Prix. Overall, he retired from approximately 33% of races between 2002 and 2006.
Following his final season with McLaren in 2006, where the team failed to win a single Grand Prix, Räikkönen moved to Ferrari. He then secured the World Drivers’ Championship in his debut year with the Italian squad in 2007.
Indy Lall, who began his career at McLaren in 1981, served as Alain Prost’s number one mechanic during his 1986 title-winning season. Lall now manages McLaren Heritage, overseeing the preservation and running of the team’s historic cars.
His long experience with McLaren’s drivers, including Ayrton Senna, Mika Häkkinen, and Lewis Hamilton, provides a unique perspective on Räikkönen’s unfulfilled championship potential at the team. The consistent mechanical setbacks ultimately prevented Räikkönen from clinching a title with McLaren.
