Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has affirmed the sport’s independence, stating it is ‘much bigger than any individual’. These comments arrive amidst ongoing speculation regarding Max Verstappen’s future.
Verstappen, a four-time world champion, has voiced consistent criticism of the 2026 power unit regulations. His dissatisfaction has fueled discussions about a potential early departure from the sport.
Domenicali acknowledged Verstappen as an ‘incredible driver’ and expressed hope for his continued participation. He emphasized his strong relationship with the Red Bull driver.
‘My opinion is that Max will stay with us, and I really hope so.’
However, Domenicali also made it clear that Formula 1 would not reshape its regulatory roadmap around any single competitor. He stressed the sport’s collective decision-making process.
The CEO highlighted the current 2026 season as ‘very fascinating’ due to increased on-track action. He noted that early predictions of dominance proved incorrect.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the Mercedes driver, currently leads the 2026 championship standings. His six Grand Prix victories have made him the youngest-ever driver to hold this position.
Domenicali praised Antonelli as an ‘incredible asset’ for the sport. He cited the Italian’s fresh approach and ability to attract new fans.
The F1 chief also confirmed ongoing discussions regarding future technical regulations. These talks involve the FIA, teams, and manufacturers to ensure the sport’s evolution.
Domenicali maintains satisfaction with the current 2026 regulations. He believes they are the ‘right thing for the sport’ despite some driver feedback.
