George Russell experienced a significant start issue at the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix, dropping multiple positions from his grid slot. The incident occurred on July 20, 2026, at the Hungaroring circuit. Mercedes confirmed an immediate investigation into the matter following the race.

The problem led to excessive wheelspin off the line, costing Russell valuable time and track position. He fell from his qualifying position of P3 to P16 by the first corner. This severely compromised his race strategy.

Mercedes Deputy Team Principal Bradley Lord provided a detailed explanation for the poor start. Lord attributed Russell’s launch difficulties to a clutch calibration anomaly.

The team identified a specific software parameter that caused the clutch to engage inconsistently during the launch sequence. This technical fault prevented a clean getaway from the grid.

Lord further elaborated that the issue was specific to Russell’s car. The problem was not replicated on teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s W17 power unit.

Mercedes implemented a temporary fix for the remainder of the Hungarian Grand Prix. A more comprehensive software update is now planned for the upcoming Dutch Grand Prix.

Russell himself commented on the situation post-race, expressing frustration with the initial setback. He acknowledged the team’s swift analysis of the problem.

The car felt strong after the initial lap, allowing me to recover some positions. It was a frustrating start, but we understand the cause.

Despite the challenging start, Russell managed to climb back through the field. He ultimately secured P9, earning two points for Mercedes.

This result followed a difficult Belgian Grand Prix where Russell retired due to a power unit issue. The W17 has shown strong qualifying pace this season.

However, Mercedes has faced intermittent reliability and race-day execution challenges. The team is working to address these inconsistencies as the 2026 season progresses.

The Hungaroring circuit, known for its tight turns and limited overtaking opportunities, made Russell’s recovery particularly difficult. His drive demonstrated the car’s underlying pace.
