Lando Norris, the reigning Formula 1 world champion, has issued a warning to McLaren regarding the critical role of time in their development efforts. This comes despite his recent victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix on July 26, 2026, which marked the team’s first Grand Prix win of the current season.
Norris stated that ‘time is your enemy’ in Formula 1, emphasizing the urgent need for continuous improvements. His comments highlight an underlying concern for the team’s long-term competitiveness, even after a significant performance uplift.
The 2026 season has presented a challenging first half for McLaren. The MCL40 car has demonstrated a narrow operating window and a notable deficit in high-speed corners, impacting overall performance.
McLaren currently holds third position in the Constructors’ Championship, trailing leaders Mercedes by 159 points. The team had openly acknowledged being approximately three months behind their rivals in the development race earlier in the season.
Expectations were high for McLaren entering the 2026 campaign, following Norris’s Drivers’ Championship triumph in 2025 and the team’s consecutive Constructors’ titles in 2024 and 2025. However, early reliability issues plagued their start.
Oscar Piastri was unable to start the first two races of the season, and both McLaren cars suffered a double DNS in China. These setbacks proved costly in terms of points and hindered the team’s learning process with the new regulations.
A major upgrade package was introduced at the Hungarian Grand Prix, featuring a redesigned floor and front brake duct furniture. This technical overhaul was crucial in securing Norris’s dominant victory in Budapest.
Earlier in the season, McLaren also brought an upgrade package to Miami, which saw Norris claim victory in the Miami Sprint race. However, the team has generally been slower than competitors in introducing new parts this year.
Norris believes McLaren does not yet fully understand the MCL40 and that significant untapped potential remains within the car. He stressed the importance of extracting this performance as quickly as possible.
Team Principal Andrea Stella confirmed a shift in McLaren’s upgrade strategy, with initial results seen in Hungary and further developments anticipated after the summer break. Stella noted that the performance improvement in Hungary was directly attributable to these upgrades.
Stella also indicated that McLaren’s status as a Mercedes engine customer has placed them at a disadvantage in fully understanding and exploiting the power unit’s capabilities this season.
Despite the cost cap, McLaren is not constrained financially for 2026 development, having allocated sufficient budget. However, other factors such as wind tunnel time present limitations to their progress.
Norris remains optimistic about securing more victories but acknowledges the strong competition and areas where the car requires further improvement. He highlighted the effective collaboration with Oscar Piastri in providing consistent feedback for development.
