Jan Lammers, Sporting Director of the Dutch Grand Prix, has reflected on the event’s significant success since its return to the Formula 1 calendar. His comments acknowledge the pivotal role played by Max Verstappen in establishing the Grand Prix’s popularity. This comes as Circuit Zandvoort prepares for its final Formula 1 race in August.
The 2026 Dutch Grand Prix, scheduled for August 21-23, will mark the conclusion of Formula 1’s current tenure at the Zandvoort circuit. Organizers have confirmed their decision not to extend the contract beyond this season, citing financial considerations as a primary factor.
Reports indicate that the annual cost of hosting the Formula 1 event is approximately €70 million. The decision to cease hosting after 2026 has been attributed to rising operational expenses and the inherent financial risks involved in staging the Grand Prix.
This move has drawn scrutiny, particularly following a €20 million dividend payout to shareholders in 2024. Organizers defended the payment, stating it was proportionate to the entrepreneurial risks undertaken in bringing Formula 1 back to Zandvoort.
Lammers’ appreciation for Max Verstappen underscores the driver’s substantial impact on the event’s appeal. Verstappen secured victories in the 2021, 2022, and 2023 editions of his home Grand Prix, fueling immense fan engagement.
Since its return in 2021, the Dutch Grand Prix has consistently attracted large crowds, with over one million fans attending the event. It has become recognized for its distinctive festival atmosphere and strong spectator turnout.
Circuit Zandvoort underwent significant modernization ahead of its Formula 1 comeback, including modifications to its iconic banked corners. The upcoming 2026 event will also feature a Sprint race, a first for the Dutch Grand Prix.
Beyond the racing, the Dutch Grand Prix has been noted for its pioneering sustainability initiatives. Efforts include ensuring 98% of visitors utilize sustainable transport methods and significantly reducing emissions from energy production.
Max Verstappen is currently pursuing his first victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The Red Bull driver has encountered challenges under the revised power unit regulations implemented this year.
The forthcoming race weekend will mark a significant occasion, representing the conclusion of Formula 1’s current chapter at Circuit Zandvoort.
