Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has defended the 2026 Formula 1 regulations, directly addressing criticism from drivers including Max Verstappen. Wolff stated that the new rules promote ‘pure racing’ and offer an exciting spectacle for fans.
Verstappen has been a vocal critic of the current regulations, which emphasize electrical energy management and active aerodynamics. He previously described the new cars as ‘anti-racing’ and compared the experience to ‘Mario Kart’.
Wolff countered these views, suggesting that some drivers’ dissatisfaction might stem from their car’s performance. He specifically pointed to Red Bull’s early 2026 season struggles, calling their car a ‘horror show’.
The Mercedes boss highlighted fan reception as a key metric, noting that over 90 percent of fans find the current racing entertaining and exciting. He emphasized the necessity for Formula 1 to evolve.
Wolff’s comments followed races such as the Chinese Grand Prix, where Verstappen retired and voiced strong disapproval. Mercedes had secured one-two victories in the opening rounds of the 2026 season.
He also issued a stern warning to critics after the Miami Grand Prix, which Mercedes won, stating that those complaining about the racing should ‘hide’.
‘If there’s one single person that complains about the race today, I think they should hide, honestly.’
Wolff acknowledged that while driver opinions are important, the sport’s focus remains on spectator engagement. He suggested that sometimes there is too much nostalgia for past eras of Formula 1.
The 2026 regulations feature a significant increase in electrical output, balancing it with the combustion engine. This shift requires drivers to manage battery deployment throughout a lap.
Despite the ongoing debate, Wolff believes the current product is good. He indicated that minor modifications could be considered in the mid-term to further optimize the racing.
