Nikola Tsolov, the Bulgarian driver currently leading the 2026 FIA Formula 2 Championship, has identified Max Verstappen as his primary inspiration. Tsolov, a member of the Red Bull Junior Team, stated he meticulously studies archival footage of the four-time world champion’s junior career, including his Formula 3 races, to enhance his own racecraft.
The 19-year-old, who competes for Campos Racing, currently holds a significant lead in the F2 Drivers’ Championship with 167 points after nine rounds, which concluded with the Hungarian Grand Prix on July 26. Campos Racing also leads the Teams’ Championship.
Tsolov has demonstrated strong performance this season, securing six victories and nine podium finishes in his F2 career to date. He notably became the first driver in Formula 2 history to achieve three consecutive race wins, a feat accomplished across the Austrian Feature Race and both the Sprint and Feature races at Silverstone.
Speaking to Viaplay at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Tsolov articulated his admiration for Verstappen.
‘Max is my biggest inspiration when it comes to racing.’
He further elaborated on his analytical approach to Verstappen’s early career.
‘Max is obviously very busy, so it’s hard to keep in contact with him. On the other hand, I do watch his onboards a lot. I even go back and watch his old Formula 3 races, to see what he did and why he stood out.’
This method involves reverse-engineering the habits and decision-making that distinguished Verstappen during his formative years in motorsport. Tsolov also acknowledged Sebastian Vettel as another significant influence.
Verstappen’s trajectory from the Red Bull junior system to a dominant force in Formula 1 serves as a benchmark for aspiring talents like Tsolov. Red Bull’s historical practice of promoting successful junior drivers fuels speculation regarding Tsolov’s future.
Racing Bulls team principal Alan Permane recently indicated that Tsolov is ‘next in line’ for a seat at the Faenza-based Formula 1 team. Permane confirmed that a decision on the 2027 driver lineup will be made later this season.
However, Permane clarified that current rumors of a finalized deal for Tsolov’s 2027 promotion are unfounded, stating that no internal discussions have taken place. Tsolov has yet to participate in an official Formula 1 practice session.
Tsolov’s perspective on his career progression reflects a pragmatic understanding of the pressures inherent in the Red Bull junior program.
‘I try to stay realistic, because things can change from one day to the next. Expectations are high, but you have to keep a cool head and stay humble.’
Earlier this month, Tsolov drove Verstappen’s Mercedes-AMG GT3 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. During an attempt at a donut, he briefly became stuck in the grass, requiring assistance from marshals.
