Mercedes driver George Russell has publicly refuted suggestions of preferential treatment for his teammate Kimi Antonelli within the team. Russell labelled such claims as ‘nonsense’, asserting that no driver at Mercedes receives special treatment from Team Principal Toto Wolff. This comes as Antonelli currently leads the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship standings.

Antonelli, who made his Formula 1 debut in 2025, replaced Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes following Hamilton’s move to Ferrari. The Italian prodigy was offered a race seat by Wolff in February 2024, prior to Hamilton’s departure being publicly confirmed.

Former Grand Prix winner Riccardo Patrese has also weighed in on the discussion. Patrese stated that Mercedes has no reason to favour Antonelli over Russell unless another team emerges as a genuine championship threat after the current summer break.

Antonelli currently holds a significant lead in the drivers’ championship, having secured six victories and nine podiums across the opening 11 rounds of the 2026 season. He is 50 points clear of Lewis Hamilton, who is now with Ferrari.

Russell, meanwhile, has experienced a challenging season, marked by reliability issues with his Mercedes power unit. He retired from the Belgian Grand Prix and has faced what has been described as ‘unexplainable underperformance’ in his W17 car.

In an additional development, Antonelli is currently facing a civil lawsuit from his former manager, Giovanni Minardi. The lawsuit, officially lodged in the Bologna court ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, seeks alleged unpaid compensation.

Minardi claims he is owed financial recognition for his role in shaping Antonelli’s early career. This included arranging a test for the Ferrari junior programme in 2014 when Antonelli was a young karting prospect.

Antonelli subsequently joined Mercedes’ junior ranks in 2018, at which point his management transitioned to Toto Wolff. The dispute centres on compensation for work during Antonelli’s formative years and claims related to the termination of their management agreement.

The case has been ongoing behind the scenes for approximately a year, with Minardi reportedly seeking ‘maxi risarcimento’, or maximum compensation. Both Wolff and former Mercedes driver scout Gwen Lagrue could be called to testify in court.

The 2026 Formula 1 season has introduced new technical regulations, including lighter cars, reduced wheelbase and width, and a greater emphasis on electrical energy within the power units. Mercedes is rumoured to be well-positioned to capitalise on these changes.
