James Hinchcliffe, an F1 TV presenter, has commented on Max Verstappen’s contractual situation, noting elements that deviate from standard practice. Verstappen is currently under contract with Red Bull Racing until the conclusion of the 2028 season.

The Dutchman’s existing agreement includes a performance-based exit clause. This clause reportedly allows him to depart the team for the 2027 season if he is not positioned within the top two of the drivers’ championship by the summer break.

Verstappen has experienced a challenging 2026 Formula 1 season, failing to secure a race victory to date. Following the Hungarian Grand Prix, where he finished second, he currently sits sixth in the championship standings.

This championship position, over 100 points behind Mercedes’ Andrea Kimi Antonelli, has reportedly activated the performance clause in his contract.

In response, Red Bull has presented Verstappen with a new contract proposal. This offer aims to extend his tenure with the team through the end of the 2029 season.

The proposed deal includes a significant salary increase, reportedly elevating his annual earnings from €65 million to approximately $80 million.

Crucially, the new contract would eliminate any existing exit clauses, effectively binding Verstappen to Red Bull regardless of future performance metrics.

Despite the lucrative offer, Verstappen has not yet committed to the extension. Reports indicate he is in no hurry to sign and has until mid-October to make a final decision.

Verstappen has publicly maintained his focus on extracting maximum performance from the current car, stating that ‘nothing is going on’ regarding his future.

However, speculation persists, fueled by public interactions between Verstappen and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, including a recent holiday encounter.

Wolff has openly expressed interest in a potential Verstappen-Antonelli driver pairing for Mercedes in 2027, though he considers Antonelli’s age a factor for that specific year.

Hinchcliffe highlighted Verstappen’s unique approach to his contract and the potential ‘domino effect’ his decision could have on the wider driver market.

‘If one or two transfers take place, the entire transfer market will be turned upside down,’ Hinchcliffe stated, referencing Verstappen and Oscar Piastri. ‘We don’t know what those two drivers are going to do now.’

The F1 TV analyst also noted Verstappen’s candid remarks about the car’s difficulties, even after securing a second-place finish in Hungary.

Internally, Red Bull has faced a challenging 2026 season marked by key personnel departures, including legendary designer Adrian Newey to Aston Martin and race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase’s announced move to McLaren in 2028.

Laurent Mekies, the current team principal, is navigating these changes, which Hinchcliffe described as a ‘defining moment’ for his leadership.

Beyond performance clauses, Carlos Sainz has previously suggested that Verstappen’s contract includes special provisions limiting his marketing and media obligations.

The ongoing discussions underscore a pivotal period for both Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing as the 2026 season progresses.
