A prominent Formula 1 analyst has declared aspects of the 2026 F1 regulations ‘illegal’, while simultaneously praising Max Verstappen’s performance as ‘insanely good’. This strong critique emerges as the sport navigates significant technical changes implemented for the current season.

The analyst’s comments specifically target the energy management rules introduced for the 2026 championship. These regulations mandate an almost 50-50 split between power derived from the combustion engine and electrical energy.

This new power unit configuration has generated considerable dissatisfaction among drivers, leading to safety concerns earlier in the season. Max Verstappen, among others, had previously voiced unhappiness regarding how these energy management requirements impacted racing, even prompting him to consider his future in Formula 1.

In response to these issues, the FIA confirmed rule adjustments in April 2026. These changes aimed to refine the use of electrical energy, specifically decreasing the qualifying recharge limit from eight megajoules to seven. This adjustment was intended to allow drivers to complete a flat-out lap without tactical energy recovery.

Despite the complexities of the new regulations, Verstappen’s recent performance has drawn significant acclaim. During the recent Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, the Red Bull driver faced challenges in practice and qualifying sessions. He recorded the seventh fastest time in the final free practice and encountered an off-track excursion during qualifying.

However, Verstappen delivered a strong race performance at the Hungaroring, securing an impressive second-place finish in the Grand Prix. This result followed a difficult start to the weekend, where he struggled to match the pace of competitors like Ferrari and Mercedes.

F1TV analyst Olav Mol specifically highlighted Verstappen’s ability to perform under these conditions. Mol stated that Verstappen’s recent drive demonstrated ‘how insanely good he is’, underscoring the Dutchman’s capacity to excel despite the demanding new technical framework.

The 2026 season represents a substantial overhaul of Formula 1 regulations, encompassing changes to chassis dimensions, minimum weight, and the introduction of active aerodynamics. These modifications aim to reduce drag by 40% and enhance overtaking opportunities.
