A Dutch medium has reported on commentary from German media regarding Max Verstappen’s driving approach in the 2026 Formula 1 season. The German perspective indicated a desire for more from Verstappen, noting that he ‘immediately went on the attack’ during races. This discussion follows recent events in the current F1 calendar.

Sky Deutschland pundit Ralf Schumacher specifically addressed Verstappen’s aggressive driving. Schumacher suggested that Verstappen’s characteristic pushing of limits might contribute to recurring incidents with the Red Bull Racing car. He questioned if Verstappen’s style demands too much from the current machinery.

Verstappen recently secured second place at the Hungarian Grand Prix, a race he described as one of the toughest this year due to car balance issues. Despite starting fourth after penalties for competitors, Verstappen consistently aimed to maximise his race outcome.

The 2026 season has presented challenges for Red Bull Racing with their RB22 car. Verstappen has openly expressed frustration with the new technical regulations, particularly the increased emphasis on battery harvesting and energy deployment.

These new regulations, according to Verstappen, make driving less instinctive and limit a driver’s ability to significantly influence performance through pure racecraft. He has described the 2026 cars as ‘counterintuitive’ to natural driving principles.

Early in the 2026 season, Verstappen was noted for his aggressive starts, with some observers linking his dissatisfaction to Mercedes’ strong performance. Martin Brundle, a former driver, previously labelled Verstappen as ‘boring’ in a rare comment.

While Verstappen’s driving standards remain high, the 2026 formula, built on energy management, appears to restrict his ability to consistently ‘out-drive’ the car. This shift has led to ongoing discussions within F1 journalism regarding his performance.
