Andrea Kimi Antonelli has established a significant lead in the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, positioning Mercedes for a potential double title. The 19-year-old Italian driver has secured six victories and three additional podium finishes across the first eleven races of the season. Antonelli currently holds 210 points, a 45-point advantage over his closest competitor, Charles Leclerc.

Mercedes began the season as the team to beat and has maintained that status. The team’s development efforts have reportedly focused on Antonelli’s feedback, contributing to his consistent performance. Despite the team’s overall success, Antonelli’s teammate, George Russell, has faced considerable challenges.

Russell currently sits fifth in the drivers’ standings with 105 points. He has openly stated that the new W17 car suits his driving style less than previous iterations. Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has acknowledged that Russell’s difficulty adapting to the car’s front-end characteristics is a contributing factor to his struggles.

Ferrari remains the only other team to have secured Grand Prix victories this season. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have each claimed a win. Hamilton, at 41, attributes his resurgence to having a car that reflects his input, particularly regarding brake setup.

The Ferrari SF-26 has demonstrated improved straight-line speed since the Monaco Grand Prix. An upcoming engine upgrade, anticipated for the Belgian Grand Prix, is expected to further enhance their performance. Leclerc, after a win at Silverstone and a second place in Spa, noted the importance of these results following earlier bad luck and errors.

Reigning Constructors’ Champion McLaren is engaged in a recovery effort. Lando Norris secured the team’s first victory of the season at the Hungarian Grand Prix, dominating the race after Oscar Piastri’s retirement. However, the Mercedes power unit in the MCL38 has shown reliability concerns, particularly with overheating in high-ambient temperature conditions, leading to two retirements for Piastri.

Red Bull Racing, utilizing an in-house developed power unit, has shown competitive pace but has been hampered by reliability issues. The RBPT-01 engine has suffered two critical failures this season, in Australia and Canada. Max Verstappen, currently fourth in the standings with 118 points, faces questions regarding his long-term commitment to the project.

The team’s ‘rotating rear wing’ concept, intended for DRS efficiency, has also drawn scrutiny from the FIA due to concerns over aerodynamic stability. This has necessitated mid-race adjustments, impacting performance. Verstappen’s manager has stated that the driver is not accustomed to racing in the midfield.

Beyond the top four teams, Alpine and Racing Bulls consistently contend for points. Haas started the season strongly but has lost ground due to a lack of significant technical updates. Williams continues to underperform with the FW48, with focus already shifting to the 2027 regulations.

Audi, in its debut Formula 1 season, has performed as anticipated, securing points in four races. The team benefits from an experienced crew and a driver lineup combining Nico Hülkenberg’s experience with Gabriel Bortoleto’s talent.

Aston Martin and Cadillac are currently at the back of the grid. Cadillac, in its inaugural season, has scored eight points, primarily through Sergio Pérez, and has shown unexpected potential in slower corners. The gap to the midfield is smaller than initially projected.

Aston Martin, however, has been a significant disappointment. The AMR26 has consistently been one of the slowest cars, frequently eliminated in Q1. Lance Stroll has scored only four points this season.

‘I have driven many bad cars. You don’t learn much from that. It’s not fun to lose 3 to 5 seconds every lap, but I still believe in the future,’ Stroll stated.
