Former Formula 1 driver Robert Doornbos has lauded Max Verstappen’s overtaking manoeuvre during the Hungarian Grand Prix, labelling it the ‘most beautiful action of the year’. Doornbos expressed significant admiration for the Red Bull driver’s performance at the Hungaroring, stating it was ‘Max at his best’.
The incident occurred in the opening stages of the race on Sunday, July 26, 2026. Verstappen executed a decisive move on Lewis Hamilton, who had just passed Liam Lawson. Verstappen capitalised on the situation by diving to the inside, effectively passing both Lawson and Hamilton in one sequence.
Verstappen himself reflected on the manoeuvre post-race, describing it as his ‘only chance’ to gain positions. He confirmed his commitment to the move, noting Red Bull’s strong braking performance aided the execution. The four-time world champion maintained the overtake was ‘all under control’.
The move garnered attention beyond the immediate trackside commentary. Kimi Antonelli, who finished third in the race, was visibly impressed when reviewing the footage in the Green Room. Antonelli’s reaction included an audible ‘oh my god’ upon witnessing the replay of Verstappen’s decisive pass.
Verstappen ultimately secured second place in the Hungarian Grand Prix, a strong recovery after qualifying sixth and starting fourth due to grid penalties for Hamilton and Antonelli. Lando Norris claimed victory, with Antonelli completing the podium. Hamilton finished fifth after a strategic pit stop under a Virtual Safety Car period.
This result marks Verstappen’s fourth podium finish of the current 2026 season. He currently holds sixth position in the Drivers’ Championship standings with 109 points, trailing reigning world champion Lando Norris by 18 points as the season progresses.
