Dutch racing analyst Tom Coronel has commented on Lando Norris’s approach during the Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying session. His remarks follow an incident where Max Verstappen experienced a spin. Norris ultimately secured pole position for the race at the Hungaroring.

Verstappen’s spin occurred on his final attempt in Q3 on Saturday, July 25, 2026. The Red Bull driver lost control of his RB22 at the final corner of the Hungaroring circuit. This incident relegated him to sixth place on the grid for Sunday’s race.

Following the session, Verstappen expressed significant frustration with his car. He stated that his Red Bull RB22 was ‘degrading’ rather than its tyres. Verstappen described the car as ‘undriveable’ due to a ‘non-existent’ rear.

Lando Norris, driving for McLaren, claimed pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix. He narrowly edged out Lewis Hamilton by a minimal margin. This marks a significant performance for McLaren at the Hungaroring.

McLaren introduced a series of upgrades for the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend. These developments appear to have contributed to their improved performance. The team demonstrated increasing pace throughout the practice sessions.

Coronel observed Norris’s driving during the session, noting the McLaren driver’s willingness to take risks. This assessment was made in the context of Verstappen’s subsequent spin.

‘But a Mercedes engine!’ they both say, laughing. The dominant Mercedes engine helped McLaren to the fastest time. McLaren brought upgrades for this weekend and they now seem to be working. ‘I have to say that they managed to gain a little time throughout the weekend, they kept getting a little better,’ says Tung. Slowly but surely McLaren managed to improve the car.

Verstappen’s spin also triggered yellow flags, leading to an investigation involving Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Antonelli is facing a potential grid penalty for allegedly failing to slow sufficiently under these conditions.

Separately, Lewis Hamilton is also under investigation by the stewards. This inquiry pertains to an alleged impeding incident involving Oscar Piastri during the same qualifying session.
