Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff acknowledged the W17’s difficult characteristics earlier in July. Wolff noted Russell’s ongoing efforts to adapt to the car’s handling nuances.
Technical analyses from June highlighted the W17’s innovative yet intricate aerodynamic design. This package has presented difficulties in achieving optimal performance across the diverse range of circuits this season.
Russell’s performance has been notably overshadowed by teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli during the first half of the 2026 season. Antonelli has consistently out-qualified and out-raced Russell.
Norris further elaborated on his stance, explaining that all Formula 1 drivers encounter difficult cars at various points in their careers. He stressed that adapting to such machinery is a fundamental aspect of the profession.
