Andrea Kimi Antonelli has attributed Mercedes-AMG Petronas’ strong performance during the 2026 Formula 1 season to a disciplined approach, stating the team made the fewest errors. The Italian driver currently leads the Drivers’ Championship standings.

Antonelli’s comments follow a season marked by consistent results, including six Grand Prix victories. His most recent win came at the Belgian Grand Prix on July 19, where he further extended his lead in the championship.

The 19-year-old secured his maiden F1 victory at the Chinese Grand Prix earlier this year. He also claimed wins at the Miami, Canadian, Monaco, and Austrian Grands Prix.

Mercedes has demonstrated strong form throughout the 2026 campaign. The team achieved two one-two finishes early in the season, showcasing the potential of their W17 challenger.

The W17 car made its initial track debut at Silverstone in January 2026, with both Antonelli and George Russell completing shakedown laps. This marked the beginning of the team’s preparations for the new technical regulations.

Antonelli has consistently emphasized a collective effort, often downplaying individual accolades. His focus remains on continuous improvement and maximizing the car’s capabilities.

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has previously highlighted the importance of managing expectations around Antonelli. Wolff noted the team’s long-term investment in the driver, who has been part of the Mercedes junior programme since 2019.

Wolff also addressed speculation regarding Ferrari’s interest in Antonelli, asserting that Mercedes identified his talent years ago. He stressed that Antonelli has been a Mercedes driver since the age of 11.

As of July 23, 2026, Antonelli holds a 45-point advantage in the Drivers’ Championship. Mercedes currently occupies a strong position in the Constructors’ Championship standings.

The Formula 1 calendar continues with the Hungarian Grand Prix scheduled for next weekend. This will be followed by the Belgian Grand Prix before the summer break.
