Günther Steiner, now a MotoGP team owner and Formula 1 pundit, has commented on Max Verstappen’s performance during the challenging 2026 Formula 1 season. Steiner described Verstappen’s current situation as a significant benchmark, acknowledging the difficulty of the Dutchman’s campaign.
Verstappen, a four-time Formula 1 World Champion from 2021 to 2024, has faced a demanding season. He currently sits P7 in the 2026 Drivers’ Championship standings, having accumulated 91 points after ten rounds of competition.
The Red Bull Racing driver has yet to secure a victory this season, recording three podium finishes as his best results. Red Bull’s car has frequently been identified as the fourth-fastest on the grid, trailing Mercedes and McLaren.
Verstappen has openly criticised the new 2026 technical regulations, particularly concerning the power units and energy management. He has labelled the rules as ‘anti-racing’ and likened the driving experience to ‘Mario Kart’.
These remarks have led to speculation regarding his long-term commitment to Formula 1, with Verstappen renewing threats to exit the sport if changes are not implemented for the 2027 season.
Steiner has previously addressed Verstappen’s public dissatisfaction, suggesting that the driver’s complaints are linked to Red Bull’s current lack of dominant performance. He indicated that Verstappen tends to express frustration when results do not align with his expectations.
‘Verstappen was a little bit happier because he was on the podium. I guess if he would have won, he would be really happy, and it would be the best regs ever,’ Steiner stated earlier this season.
The former Haas team principal also noted that Verstappen ‘throws the toys out of the pram when it doesn’t go his way’. This perspective highlights a tension between Verstappen’s competitive drive and the current regulatory framework.
Verstappen’s father, Jos Verstappen, publicly responded to Steiner’s earlier comments, criticising his remarks. Despite the team’s struggles and external commentary, Verstappen confirmed his commitment to Red Bull Racing for the 2026 season, with his contract extending until at least the end of 2028.
He continues to lead his teammate, Isack Hadjar, by 31 points in the intra-team battle. Verstappen’s ability to navigate the current competitive landscape, despite the car’s limitations and his discontent with the regulations, serves as the benchmark Steiner referenced.
