Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur has tempered expectations for the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix, despite widespread belief that the Hungaroring circuit should favour the SF-26 chassis. Vasseur stressed that a theoretical advantage does not guarantee success.

The Scuderia arrives in Budapest following encouraging results, including Charles Leclerc’s victory at Silverstone and a second-place finish at Spa-Francorchamps. Lewis Hamilton also secured a podium at Silverstone and a fourth-place finish in Belgium.

The Hungaroring, often likened to ‘Monaco without the walls,’ features numerous slow corners and short straights. This layout places less emphasis on outright engine power and highlights mechanical grip and high-downforce stability.

The SF-26 has demonstrated strengths in slow-speed cornering and chassis performance, making the Budapest track theoretically well-suited to its characteristics. This has fueled optimism among some observers.

New for the 2026 season, the Hungaroring incorporates four ‘Straight Mode’ zones as part of Formula 1’s active-aerodynamics system. These zones allow for a low-drag configuration, potentially mitigating Ferrari’s power unit deficit on straights.

The circuit’s numerous braking zones also offer significant opportunities for energy recovery. This could reduce the risk of ‘super clipping,’ where battery depletion impacts performance on longer full-throttle sections.

Vasseur, however, remains pragmatic. He stated, ‘On paper, the Hungaroring could suit the characteristics of our car a little better, but that alone is no guarantee.’

He further emphasised that ‘execution will make the difference,’ calling for the team to maintain concentration, discipline, and attention to detail throughout the weekend.

High temperatures expected in Budapest will also challenge tyre management and car performance. Balancing qualifying pace with race tyre degradation will be crucial for both drivers.

Mercedes currently leads the Constructors’ Championship, with Ferrari 73 points behind. Kimi Antonelli holds the lead in the Drivers’ standings, 45 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton.

We arrive in Budapest after two encouraging weekends, in which we maximized results thanks to great teamwork. This gives us confidence, but we also know that each Grand Prix tells its own story.

The Hungarian Grand Prix, the eleventh round of the 2026 season, is scheduled for July 26.
