Lewis Hamilton secured a fourth-place finish at the Belgian Grand Prix, navigating a weekend marked by multiple incidents and penalties. The Ferrari driver’s performance at Spa-Francorchamps concluded on Sunday, July 19, 2026, with a result he described as a relief given the circumstances.
The challenging weekend began for Hamilton with a significant crash at the conclusion of Free Practice 3. This incident caused damage to his SF-26, necessitating extensive repair work by his Ferrari mechanics prior to qualifying.
During the opening lap of the Grand Prix, Hamilton was involved in a collision with George Russell at Turn 1, Les Combes. The contact forced Russell’s Mercedes out of the race prematurely.
Stewards subsequently issued Hamilton a five-second time penalty for causing the incident, determining he failed to maintain adequate separation. Hamilton, however, maintained his belief that it was a standard racing incident.
The collision also inflicted substantial damage to the front-left underfloor of Hamilton’s Ferrari, resulting in a significant loss of downforce. This compromised the car’s balance for the remainder of the 44-lap race.
Further complications arose during Hamilton’s pit stop under a Virtual Safety Car. As he was released, he made contact with a mechanic. Fortunately, the mechanic sustained no injuries.
Ferrari received a €30,000 fine for the unsafe release, with €10,000 suspended for 12 months. The stewards attributed the incident to a complex combination of factors, including a late instruction for a wing adjustment and communication issues within the team.
Hamilton also voiced frustration on team radio during the race, disagreeing with a strategic decision. Despite this, he later commended the team’s overall strategy and pit stop execution.
Despite the series of setbacks, Hamilton’s fourth-place finish proved crucial. It moved him to second position in the Drivers’ Championship standings, 45 points behind leader Kimi Antonelli.
This result means Hamilton has accumulated 159 points in the first 10 races of the 2026 season, surpassing his total of 156 points from the entire 2025 season. His 2025 campaign with Ferrari was widely regarded as his most challenging.
Sky F1 pundit Martin Brundle suggested that Hamilton would have experienced a sense of relief to secure such a strong points haul after a weekend fraught with difficulties.
Hamilton acknowledged the weekend was not optimal from his perspective but expressed gratitude for the points, considering the damage and earlier crash. He stated his belief that he possessed the pace to contend for a win without the issues.
