Lando Norris has expressed continued criticism regarding the 2026 Formula 1 regulations, specifically highlighting issues with the new power units. The McLaren driver’s comments follow the recent Belgian Grand Prix, where he qualified third.
Norris stated that the current power unit architecture leads to too many factors being beyond a driver’s control. He noted that the power unit often dictates performance rather than the driver.
The 2026 regulations introduced a 50-50 split between the internal combustion engine and electric power. This significant shift towards electrification has been a central point of contention for drivers.
The British driver previously described the new-era cars as having transformed from the ‘best ever’ to ‘probably the worst to drive’. This sentiment emerged early in the season after qualifying sixth for the Australian Grand Prix.
Drivers are reportedly forced to lift early on straights and manage complex battery states. Constant monitoring of steering wheel readouts for energy harvesting is also required.
Norris has observed that the power units can be erratic, delivering unexpected power spikes or cutting power when not desired. McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella acknowledged a ‘self-learning’ element in these units.
Stella indicated that this self-learning aspect is highly sensitive to driver input and can sometimes be ‘not very smart’. This contributes to the unpredictable behaviour experienced on track.
The issues are particularly evident at circuits like Spa-Francorchamps, which is an energy-starved track. Such venues offer limited opportunities to recharge batteries, exacerbating the management challenges.
High-speed circuits such as Suzuka also expose the shortcomings of the new regulations. Drivers must compromise apex speed to optimise energy harvesting and deployment for straights.
Norris has labelled the racing under these regulations as ‘very artificial’. He also raised concerns about increased danger due to closing speeds when cars are harvesting energy.
The 2026 technical regulations also feature an overhaul of the chassis and aerodynamics. Cars are now shorter, narrower, and lighter, with reduced downforce.
Active aerodynamics, including adjustable front and rear wings, are now a full-time feature. These dynamically adjust based on the car’s position on the circuit.
Despite his criticisms of the power unit, Norris has acknowledged some positive aspects of the chassis and aero changes. He noted that these elements make the cars ‘better to follow’ and ‘more fun to drive in some ways’.
However, his primary concern remains the power unit, which he believes ‘hurts the soul’ by forcing compromises in driving style. Norris has even called for the complete removal of the battery component.
It’s a shame that there’s so many things that can dictate your own pace in qualifying. It’s not down to the driver. It’s just down to hoping you get lucky that the power unit does what it should do and doesn’t do something silly.
Other drivers, including George Russell, have also reported issues with their power units. Russell has previously complained about a lack of straight-line speed from his Mercedes power unit.
McLaren’s technical director, Mark Temple, has provided insights into these fundamental changes. He confirmed the significant impact of power unit energy management and aerodynamic modifications on driver behaviour.
