Lewis Hamilton received a five-second time penalty during the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. The Ferrari driver was sanctioned for causing an opening-lap collision with Mercedes’ George Russell. This incident occurred on Sunday, July 19, 2026, marking a significant event in the current Formula 1 season.

The contact between the two British drivers took place at the Combes corner. Russell’s Mercedes was clipped by Hamilton’s Ferrari, sending him into a spin and ultimately into the gravel trap. Russell was unable to rejoin the race, resulting in an early retirement from the Grand Prix.

Stewards investigated the incident, concluding that Hamilton was predominantly at fault. Their assessment indicated that Russell had established sufficient overlap to be entitled to racing room. Hamilton’s car failed to maintain adequate separation during the maneuver.

The FIA stewards’ report detailed that Hamilton’s Ferrari experienced understeer through Turn 5. Despite applying corrective steering, his left-front wheel struck Russell’s right-hand side. Mitigating factors included Hamilton’s attempt to leave space and the contact resulting from a loss of front-end grip.

The opening-lap setting, characterized by reduced grip and compressed racing conditions, also influenced the stewards’ decision. This led to a five-second time penalty, a reduced sanction compared to the standard ten-second penalty, as per FIA Penalty Guidelines.

Russell described the collision as a ‘racing incident’ but also highlighted underlying issues with his Mercedes. He stated that his car failed to deploy sufficient power on the run to the Les Combes corner, which contributed to his inability to fight effectively.

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff acknowledged the team’s responsibility for Russell’s struggles. Wolff admitted that a power unit deficiency, specifically a lack of straight-line speed, affected all Mercedes engines. He stated this issue ‘bit him [Russell] badly’.

Russell’s retirement from the Belgian Grand Prix delivered a significant blow to his championship aspirations. He entered the race second in the drivers’ standings, trailing his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli by 25 points. Antonelli went on to win the race, extending his lead.

Hamilton continued the race after the collision, serving his five-second penalty during his sole pit stop under a virtual safety car. He ultimately recovered to finish fourth. This result moved him to second in the drivers’ championship standings.

Later in the race, Hamilton and Ferrari faced a separate investigation for an unsafe pit-stop release. Hamilton collided with a mechanic while exiting his pit box. Ferrari received a €30,000 fine, with no further sporting penalty for Hamilton.
