Oscar Piastri has confirmed his commitment to McLaren for the 2027 Formula 1 season. The Australian driver made his position clear ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, effectively addressing ongoing speculation regarding his future.
This announcement directly impacts recent rumours linking Max Verstappen with a potential move to the Woking-based team. Verstappen’s contract with Red Bull Racing extends until the end of 2028.
However, his current agreement includes performance-related exit clauses. These clauses could allow him to depart Red Bull for the 2027 season if he is not within the top two positions in the drivers’ standings by the summer break.
Verstappen currently sits seventh in the championship after nine races, making the activation of this clause a mathematical possibility. Red Bull has experienced a challenging start to the 2026 season, marked by reliability issues and unexpected incidents.
Reports from the Austrian Grand Prix weekend suggested that Verstappen’s representatives had initiated discussions with McLaren regarding a potential seat. These talks reportedly involved McLaren CEO Zak Brown and Verstappen’s management.
Piastri acknowledged the existence of these discussions but stated he was not concerned. He views such contact as part of drivers ‘exploring options’ within the competitive F1 market.
‘Clearly, Max is feeling, I don’t know, maybe he’s not in a great position at the moment or exploring options. It was the same thing last year with him and Mercedes. So it’s nothing new,’ Piastri stated.
He further added, ‘I’m very happy with where I’m at, where things are at and how it’s been going.’ Piastri also confirmed reassurances from Zak Brown and Team Principal Andrea Stella regarding his secure position at McLaren.
Verstappen, when questioned about his future ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, maintained a reserved stance. He stated, ‘There’s nothing to say,’ and indicated he would announce any developments himself.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown has consistently expressed satisfaction with the team’s current driver pairing of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Piastri’s manager, Mark Webber, had previously dismissed rumours of his client seeking an exit, calling such reports ‘fiction’.
