George Russell has used an art-world analogy to explain his difficulties in mastering the Mercedes W17 this season. He compared the car to the Mona Lisa, suggesting it is a masterpiece but exceptionally sensitive to get right.
The comparison points to a car with a very narrow operating window. While the W17 is clearly the class of the 2026 field, Russell’s results have fluctuated as he struggles to find a consistent feeling with the setup.
His difficulties were most apparent earlier in the season. After the Monaco Grand Prix, Russell found himself 68 points behind his teammate, Kimi Antonelli, who had secured five consecutive victories.
Russell has since reduced that deficit to 25 points, aided by reliability issues for Antonelli and improved results of his own, including a victory in Austria. However, he remains candid about his performance deficit through the first part of the year.
He has publicly stated that Antonelli has performed better and deserves to be ahead in the championship standings. Russell believes the current points gap is a fair reflection of their respective performances over the season’s nine races so far.
‘He has done a better job than me this year to this point, so he deserves to be ahead of me.’
Team Principal Toto Wolff has also acknowledged Russell’s challenges. Wolff noted that the driver had “days of struggle” during the British Grand Prix weekend because he was “not gelling with the car”.
Russell himself admitted he is “still struggling to understand this car”. This suggests an ongoing battle to adapt his driving style to the specific characteristics of the new-generation 2026 machine.
Analysis suggests his traditionally smooth, high-commitment driving technique may not fully suit the lower-downforce W17. The car appears to require more management of small slides, which has played into Antonelli’s hands more effectively.
The team’s overall campaign has also been complicated by technical issues. Wolff has stated that Mercedes has “left too much on the table” in recent races, failing to convert the car’s clear pace into maximum points due to poor reliability.
These reliability problems have affected both drivers, costing Russell a probable win in Canada and Antonelli strong results in Spain and Great Britain. Wolff has urged the team to execute cleanly and resolve the issues.
