George Russell has stated that the FIA’s handling of Max Verstappen’s qualifying incident at the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix was flawed. The Mercedes driver secured pole position for the event on June 27, 2026, but believes the circumstances surrounding Verstappen’s crash should have led to a different outcome.

During the final moments of Q3 at the Red Bull Ring, Verstappen crashed his Red Bull at Turn 9, prompting the deployment of yellow flags. Russell, who was on a flying lap behind Verstappen, proceeded through the affected sector.

Russell lifted off the throttle as required under a single yellow flag, ultimately improving his lap time to claim pole position. The FIA stewards investigated the incident but cleared Russell, concluding he had reduced speed sufficiently.

However, Russell later admitted that the nature of Verstappen’s crash warranted double yellow flags, which would have necessitated abandoning his lap. This would have effectively nullified his pole-winning effort.

‘Should that incident have been a double yellow? Of course it should have been,’ Russell stated, while also defending marshals for their rapid decision-making in such situations.

Verstappen himself defended Russell’s adherence to the rules but questioned the FIA’s initial decision to deploy only a single yellow flag. He described the situation as ‘quite crazy’ given the severity of his impact.

The Red Bull driver suggested that any incident causing a double yellow or red flag in qualifying should result in the deletion of the offending driver’s best lap. This would act as a deterrent and ensure fairness.

The FIA confirmed that a single yellow flag was deployed immediately after Verstappen’s crash. It took approximately 20 to 25 seconds for the signal to be upgraded to a double-waved yellow.

This upgrade occurred after both Russell and his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli had already completed their laps. Antonelli, believing it was a double yellow, had aborted his own flying lap.

The incident reignited discussions surrounding track limits and stewarding consistency, particularly at the Red Bull Ring. The circuit has a history of such issues, with gravel traps introduced in some areas to deter infringements.

Former team principal Günther Steiner has consistently criticised the FIA’s approach to stewarding and track limits enforcement. He has previously called for quicker, more consistent decisions from race control.
