Charles Leclerc’s strategic involvement in Ferrari’s car development, which saw him outperform Lewis Hamilton in 2025, presents a clear operational model for George Russell at Mercedes. Leclerc’s efforts to tailor the Ferrari SF-26 to his driving style, including a significant redesign of his steering wheel software, proved instrumental in his recent British Grand Prix victory.

During the 2025 season, Lewis Hamilton experienced a challenging debut year with Ferrari, finishing sixth in the drivers’ standings without a single podium. This placed him 86 points behind teammate Leclerc. Leclerc’s ability to adapt and influence the car’s direction was a critical factor in this performance disparity.

However, Hamilton has demonstrated a significant turnaround in the 2026 season. He currently sits third in the championship, ahead of Leclerc, with a victory at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona and five podium finishes from nine races. This resurgence is partly attributed to the 2026 regulations, which have produced a car that better suits his natural driving inputs.

Both Leclerc and Hamilton have been heavily involved in the development of Ferrari’s 2026 car, the SF-26, from its early stages. Hamilton spent 14 months in the simulator shaping the SF-26, requesting specific characteristics such as a more aggressive brake pedal and reduced engine braking.

Leclerc’s recent success at Silverstone, where he secured his first win of the 2026 season, followed a period of struggling to match Hamilton’s pace. Ferrari’s decision to adapt the car to Leclerc’s natural style, rather than requiring him to fundamentally change his approach, was a key factor in this breakthrough.

At Mercedes, George Russell is currently navigating his own intense intra-team battle with rookie Kimi Antonelli. Russell, confirmed as a Mercedes driver for 2026 alongside Antonelli, is the more experienced of the pair. Antonelli has already secured a race win in China and multiple pole positions this season, posing a significant challenge to Russell’s leadership.

Mercedes has adopted a forward-thinking approach to car development for the 2026 regulations, aiming to avoid past pitfalls. Russell acknowledges that while driver feedback is crucial, the primary credit for car development belongs to the engineers. He is actively involved in simulator work to guide the team’s direction.

The 2026 technical regulations, featuring new power units with a 50/50 electrical and internal combustion split, sustainable fuels, and active aerodynamics, demand a high level of driver-team collaboration. The ability to influence car characteristics and adapt to these complex systems is proving essential for performance.
