Williams reserve driver Luke Browning has offered his perspective on Max Verstappen, highlighting the reigning champion’s influence on his own development. Browning, who was confirmed as Williams’ Formula 1 Reserve Driver for the 2026 season in January, has a long-standing relationship with Verstappen.
Browning expressed significant admiration for Verstappen, describing him as ‘exceptional’ in his overall approach to racing. This includes Verstappen’s simulator work and his method of adapting to a car.
The British driver is part of Team Redline, Verstappen’s sim racing outfit, alongside Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto. This connection has provided Browning with direct insight into Verstappen’s methods and competitive drive.
Verstappen has provided mentorship to Browning throughout his progression in junior categories, including Formula 3 and Formula 2. Browning stated that the primary benefit he gains from Verstappen is ‘just the ability to drive together on the simulator’.
Browning also recounted specific advice from Verstappen, who told him: ‘Don’t think too much. Let it come to you mate talent’s there just crack on.’ This guidance underscores a direct, performance-focused philosophy.
The Williams reserve driver believes there is a significant correlation between sim racing and real-life competition. He cited the example of Chris Lulham, a sim racing world champion, who successfully transitioned to GT cars with an opportunity provided by Verstappen.
Browning is currently competing in the Japanese Super Formula Championship this year, combining these duties with his Williams F1 reserve role. He has also participated in Free Practice 1 sessions for Williams during the current 2026 Formula 1 season.
