Former Formula 1 driver Jolyon Palmer has cautioned Mercedes regarding a potential deal with Max Verstappen, suggesting such a move could prove problematic for the team. Palmer’s remarks come as speculation continues about Verstappen’s future beyond his current Red Bull Racing contract.

Verstappen’s current 2026 season with Red Bull has been marked by significant struggles. The four-time world champion is reportedly dissatisfied with the new regulations and the performance of the RB22 chassis.

He has experienced reliability issues, including battery problems and an ERS cooling failure, leading to three retirements this season. Verstappen currently sits seventh in the drivers’ championship, 103 points behind the leader after nine races.

Palmer stated on the F1 Nation podcast that Verstappen is ‘not here to finish eighth in qualifying’ and ‘not even fight for a podium’. This indicates the driver’s clear ambition for top-tier performance.

In contrast, Mercedes has demonstrated strong form in the 2026 season, securing victories in Australia and China. The team’s current driver lineup consists of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has consistently dismissed the possibility of Verstappen joining the team for the 2027 season. Wolff has publicly affirmed his satisfaction with the current pairing.

Wolff stated that Mercedes ‘don’t want to change things’ and is ‘very happy with the two of them’. Russell holds a multi-year deal, and Antonelli is also expected to remain with the team beyond 2026.

Reports from early July 2026 indicate that Mercedes formally rejected an offer from Verstappen’s management. This was despite a reported willingness from Verstappen to reduce his annual salary to €50 million for a three-year contract.

Wolff is reportedly operating from a position of strength due to Mercedes’ current success. The team’s strategic decision prioritises stability over a high-profile driver change.

Verstappen is contracted with Red Bull until the end of 2028, but his deal includes performance-related exit clauses. One such clause allows him to leave for 2027 if he is not within the top two in the standings by the summer break.

As of July 7, 2026, Verstappen’s position in the championship makes it possible for him to activate this clause. This keeps his future open despite Red Bull’s desire to retain him.

Palmer’s concern stems from the potential internal disruption a Verstappen arrival could cause at Mercedes. Tension arose within the team during similar speculation in 2025.

The existing strong dynamic between Russell and Antonelli could be destabilised by introducing a driver of Verstappen’s stature and demands. This forms the basis of Palmer’s warning.
