Max Verstappen’s future at Red Bull Racing beyond the current 2026 season remains a subject of intense speculation. Reports indicate the team is evaluating potential driver replacements for the 2027 season. This comes amidst ongoing discussions regarding clauses within Verstappen’s existing contract.
Verstappen is currently contracted with Red Bull Racing until the conclusion of the 2028 season. However, a performance-related exit clause has been activated, allowing him to depart for 2027 if he is not within the top two of the drivers’ standings by the summer break.
As of early July 2026, following the British Grand Prix, Verstappen is mathematically unable to secure a top-two position in the championship before the summer break. This development formally triggers the exit clause in his agreement.
Carlos Sainz has emerged as a leading external candidate for a Red Bull seat should Verstappen leave. Sainz is currently without a confirmed drive for 2027 and is a prominent figure in the active driver market. His prior experience within the Red Bull junior programme is noted.
Liam Lawson, currently competing with Visa Cash App Racing Bulls, is considered a strong internal option for a promotion. Lawson has demonstrated consistent performance during the 2026 season and in previous substitute appearances.
Other high-profile drivers, such as Lando Norris and Fernando Alonso, are unlikely to be available for Red Bull in 2027. Norris signed a long-term contract extension with McLaren earlier this year, committing his future to the Woking-based squad.
Fernando Alonso also extended his agreement with Aston Martin for the 2026 and 2027 seasons, making a move to Red Bull improbable. Alex Albon is another name that has been mentioned in broader driver market discussions.
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has previously expressed interest in Verstappen. However, former team principal Günther Steiner recently stated that Wolff is ‘too smart’ to pursue Verstappen, citing Mercedes’ stable driver lineup of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown has dismissed speculation linking Verstappen to his team. Brown affirmed McLaren’s satisfaction with its current driver pairing of Norris and Oscar Piastri for the long term.
Laurent Mekies, Team Principal of Visa Cash App Racing Bulls, has indicated that providing a competitive car is key to retaining top drivers. The Red Bull camp faces a critical period in its 2027 planning.
