Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur has addressed recent speculation concerning Lewis Hamilton’s contract extension with the Scuderia. Reports from Italian media suggested Hamilton was preparing to activate an option to remain with the team beyond the 2026 Formula 1 season. Vasseur maintained a firm stance on the timing of such discussions.
Hamilton’s current agreement with Ferrari covers the 2025 and 2026 seasons. This initial deal included an option for a further year, extending his tenure into 2027. Unsubstantiated reports have indicated this option rests solely with the driver.
Ahead of last weekend’s British Grand Prix, Vasseur was questioned about the ongoing contract talks. He responded sharply to the inquiries.
‘Who spoke about the extension? I will discuss with him for the extension, not everybody. He is still under contract with us and now is not the time to discuss about an extension.’
Despite this public caution, Vasseur offered a different perspective in an earlier interview with Corriere della Sera. When directly asked if Hamilton would remain with Ferrari for 2027, Vasseur simply replied, ‘Yes.’
Hamilton’s performance during the current 2026 season has been a factor in the renewed interest. After a challenging 2025 campaign, he secured his first Ferrari victory at the Barcelona Grand Prix in mid-June.
The British driver has accumulated five podium finishes this season, including results in China, Canada, Monaco, and Britain. He currently holds third position in the Drivers’ Championship standings.
Hamilton has also publicly expressed his intent to continue in Formula 1 for an extended period. He stated earlier this year at the Canadian Grand Prix that he is ‘100 per cent’ committed to Ferrari for the 2027 season.
Further reports suggest Hamilton’s contract could potentially extend through the 2028 season, depending on the activation of specific clauses. This would see him racing past his 43rd birthday.
The situation surrounding Hamilton’s future also impacts Ferrari’s junior driver program. Oliver Bearman is considered a leading candidate for a future Ferrari seat. Hamilton’s long-term presence could influence Bearman’s progression within the team.
