Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff identified Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s exceptional talent during the Italian’s formative years in karting and Formula 4. Wolff’s assessment of Antonelli’s capabilities dates back to his early involvement in the Mercedes Junior Programme.
Antonelli, born in Bologna in 2006, joined the Mercedes Junior Programme in April 2019 at the age of 12. This recruitment followed Mercedes’ observation of his precocious talent from around age eleven.
Wolff has stated that talent can be recognized from approximately ten years old, when young drivers begin competing in international karting series. Antonelli’s consistent victories against older competitors provided a clear indication of his potential.
During 2019, Antonelli secured multiple karting titles, including the WSK Euro Series and Super Master Series in the OK Junior category. He also finished as runner-up in the FIA European Karting Championship.
His karting success continued into 2020, where he claimed the FIA Karting European Championship and another WSK Euro Series title in the OK class. These achievements underscored his rapid development.
The transition to single-seater racing further solidified Wolff’s conviction. Antonelli won both the Italian and ADAC Formula 4 championships in 2022. Wolff later referenced Antonelli’s Formula 4 performances when praising his current F1 results.
Antonelli progressed through Formula Regional, winning both the Middle East and European championships in 2023. He then competed in FIA Formula 2 during 2024, securing two victories and finishing sixth in the standings.
His Formula 1 debut came in 2025 with Mercedes, replacing Lewis Hamilton. The rookie season presented a learning curve, with periods of strong performance and challenging weekends.
The 2026 Formula 1 season has seen Antonelli emerge as a dominant force. He currently leads the World Drivers’ Championship. This marks him as the youngest championship leader in F1 history.
As of the British Grand Prix, Antonelli has achieved five race wins, five pole positions, nine fastest laps, and ten podium finishes this season. He secured three consecutive victories from pole position in China, Japan, and Miami.
Antonelli also holds the record for the youngest Grand Prix polesitter, achieved in China at 19 years, six months, and 17 days. He is also the youngest driver to lead a lap and score a grand chelem.
Wolff has acknowledged Antonelli’s current performance, describing it as ‘special’ and ‘astounding’. He maintains a long-term perspective, suggesting a three-year development programme for young drivers to fully mature.
Despite Antonelli’s immediate success, Wolff continues to manage external expectations, emphasizing the importance of sustained development. He has affirmed that Antonelli possesses the qualities to become a World Champion.
