Former Formula 1 driver David Schumacher has predicted Max Verstappen will compete in endurance races, specifically mentioning the Nordschleife and Spa 24-hour events, within the next two years. This forecast aligns with Verstappen’s expressed interest in expanding his racing activities beyond Formula 1.
Verstappen has voiced frustration with current F1 regulations, which he believes prioritize battery and tire management over raw speed. He seeks the opportunity to push ‘full gas’ in long-distance racing, a factor driving his interest in endurance categories.
The four-time world champion has already engaged in GT racing. In 2025, he secured a victory in the NSL9 at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, driving a Ferrari.
Earlier this year, in May 2026, Verstappen made his debut in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. He competed in a Mercedes GT3 car, sharing driving duties with Dani Juncadella, Jules Gounon, and Lucas Auer.
The team led the race by over half a minute on Sunday morning before a driveshaft issue forced the car into the garage, ending their contention for victory. Despite the mechanical retirement, Verstappen stated he still enjoyed the experience.
The 24 Hours of Le Mans remains a primary ambition for Verstappen. Ford, set to return to the World Endurance Championship’s Hypercar category in 2027, has confirmed discussions with Verstappen regarding a potential future Le Mans entry.
These conversations between Ford and Verstappen have been ongoing for over three years. Mark Rushbrook, Ford’s global director of racing, indicated that many factors, including scheduling, need to align for such an appearance.
The Le Mans event often conflicts with the Formula 1 calendar. For instance, the 2026 24 Hours of Le Mans took place between June 10 and 14, coinciding with the Catalunya Grand Prix.
Fernando Alonso, a two-time Le Mans winner, has expressed interest in teaming up with Verstappen for a future entry. Kimi Antonelli, a Mercedes driver, has also stated his desire to compete in an endurance race alongside Verstappen.
Verstappen is currently under contract with Red Bull until the end of the 2028 season. His contract includes performance-based exit clauses.
Red Bull’s willingness to allow Verstappen to pursue other motorsport ventures is seen by some, including former F1 driver David Coulthard, as a reason for him to remain with the team long-term. Verstappen has also hinted at questioning his long-term F1 future beyond 2028 if regulations are not adjusted to his preference.
