Max Verstappen’s bid for victory in the 2026 Nürburgring 24 Hours race concluded prematurely due to a critical mechanical failure. The #3 Mercedes-AMG Team Verstappen Racing car, which Verstappen shared with Dani Juncadella, Lucas Auer, and Jules Gounon, suffered a driveshaft issue in the final hours of the endurance event.

The team had maintained a strong position throughout the race, leading comfortably with a significant advantage as the event approached its conclusion. Verstappen himself had completed impressive stints, building a lead of over 30 seconds at one point.

The mechanical problem manifested with approximately four hours remaining in the race. Dani Juncadella, who had just taken over driving duties from Verstappen, reported an issue affecting the car’s rear-right.

This forced the #3 Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo into the pit lane for extensive repairs. The driveshaft failure effectively ended the team’s challenge for an outright victory at the iconic Nordschleife circuit.

Verstappen expressed his disappointment following the incident, describing it as a ‘very bitter pill to swallow’. He acknowledged that such mechanical issues are an inherent part of motorsport.

Despite the frustrating outcome, Verstappen also stated that he thoroughly enjoyed the experience of competing in the Nürburgring 24 Hours. He indicated a strong desire to return to the event in future seasons.

Juncadella, who was in the car when the problem occurred, also conveyed the team’s devastation. He later praised Verstappen’s driving performance during the race.

After significant repair time, the #3 car eventually rejoined the race for the final laps to take the chequered flag. It was ultimately classified in 36th position following post-race disqualifications of other competitors.
