FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has publicly stated his belief that Christian Horner will return to Formula 1. This declaration follows Horner’s recent appearance in the paddock at the British Grand Prix last weekend, marking his first official visit since his departure from Red Bull Racing.

Ben Sulayem expressed enthusiasm for Horner’s potential return, responding with a direct ‘Yes’ when questioned. He further asserted, ‘He will get back. Where is not for me to say – even if I know, it is for him to say.’

The FIA President underscored Horner’s track record, suggesting that his past achievements should take precedence over previous controversies. ‘You look at his background, everyone makes mistakes. But did he deliver? What do you want? Do you want to win or not?’ Ben Sulayem questioned.

Horner was dismissed from his role as Team Principal and CEO of Red Bull Racing on July 9, 2025, shortly after the British Grand Prix. He officially parted ways with the team in September 2025, reportedly agreeing to an £80 million severance package.

Following his exit, Horner was subject to a period of gardening leave, which has now concluded. This makes him a free agent, able to pursue new opportunities within the sport.

Horner has outlined clear conditions for any potential return, insisting he would only accept a position offering significant influence and the opportunity to ‘drive difference’ and win. He seeks a partnership role rather than merely being a hired hand.

Speculation has frequently linked Horner with a return to the F1 grid, with Alpine, Aston Martin, and Ferrari among the teams mentioned. He is reportedly part of an investment group interested in acquiring a 24% stake in Alpine.

Renault CEO Francois Provost, however, stated on July 8, 2026, that no discussions have yet taken place with Horner regarding the Alpine stake. Provost emphasized that Renault would retain control and seek a buyer with shared objectives.

Alpine, which finished last in the 2025 Teams’ Championship, is currently utilizing Mercedes power units for the 2026 season. Flavio Briatore is serving as interim Team Principal, working alongside Managing Director Steve Nielsen.

Beyond Alpine, Horner has also been linked to Aston Martin, where former Red Bull design legend Adrian Newey joined in 2024. Additionally, there are rumors of a potential leadership role with Chinese manufacturer BYD, which is exploring a 12th team entry into F1.

Horner’s departure from Red Bull followed allegations of inappropriate behavior towards a female colleague. He consistently denied these claims and was cleared twice after internal investigations.

Since May 2026, Horner has taken on a non-F1 role as an advisor to Oakley Capital, a London-based private equity firm. He advises on investment strategy within the premium sports sector.
