Max Verstappen retired from the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on July 5, 2026, following a high-speed crash at Stowe corner. The incident occurred on lap 48 while Verstappen was running in third position, chasing Lewis Hamilton. This crash triggered a late Safety Car period, with Charles Leclerc ultimately securing the race victory.
Verstappen attributed the crash to a recurring rear-wing issue on his Red Bull RB22. He stated that the rear wing failed to close fully after a straight-mode activation, leading to a significant loss of downforce and the subsequent spin.
This marks the second such high-speed failure for Verstappen this season, following a similar incident during qualifying in Austria the previous race weekend. Verstappen described the situation as ‘super dangerous’ and expressed considerable frustration with the repeated mechanical problems.
The FIA has initiated an inquiry into Red Bull Racing’s rotating rear wing. This investigation follows the two high-speed crashes experienced by Verstappen, both linked to the active aerodynamics package designed to reduce drag.
Ferrari also operates a similar rollover rear wing concept, though they have not reported comparable issues. The FIA routinely investigates major crashes, but the nature of Verstappen’s recent incidents has prompted a specific focus on the wing’s functionality.
Former Formula 1 driver Robert Doornbos commented on the situation on Ziggo Sport Race Café. Doornbos highlighted Verstappen’s escalating frustration with the team’s recurring technical issues.
‘The frustration is now really coming out of Max’s ears. The team can issue a press release, but it is starting to eat away at him.’
Doornbos also questioned Verstappen’s long-term tenure at Red Bull, suggesting he might have remained with the team for too long. He advised Verstappen to adopt a more ‘selfish’ approach regarding his future career decisions.
Verstappen himself conveyed his disappointment post-race, calling the situation ‘painful’ and ‘frustrating’. He indicated he was ‘fed up’ with the issues and noted dissatisfaction with the car’s balance and top speed throughout the Silverstone weekend.
Laurent Mekies, a Red Bull Racing boss, acknowledged Verstappen’s discontent. He confirmed the team would thoroughly review the rear wing system to prevent any recurrence of the problem, even considering its removal if necessary.
The British Grand Prix concluded under Safety Car conditions. George Russell secured a second-place finish, while championship rival Kimi Antonelli experienced car issues earlier in the race.
