A Dutch analyst anticipates Max Verstappen will soon re-engage in discussions with Red Bull Racing. This expectation arises amidst increasing reports of a strained relationship between the four-time world champion and his team. The current Formula 1 season has seen significant challenges for the Milton Keynes outfit.

The relationship has reportedly shown cracks, with pundits suggesting a ‘torn curtain’ between the parties. This follows a difficult period marked by performance issues with the RB22 car. Verstappen’s frustrations have become increasingly evident.

Verstappen retired from the recent British Grand Prix due to a rear-wing failure. He described this issue as ‘dangerous,’ noting a similar problem occurred at the Austrian Grand Prix. These mechanical failures have undermined his 2026 season.

The Dutchman’s contract, which extends until the end of 2028, includes a performance-based exit clause. This provision allows him to depart if he is not within the top two or three positions in the drivers’ standings by the summer break.

Following the British Grand Prix on July 5, Verstappen is mathematically unable to meet this contractual threshold. He currently sits seventh in the championship, making the exit clause active. This shifts the balance of power.

Internal disagreements within Red Bull have also surfaced. Verstappen reportedly expressed a desire to start the British Grand Prix from the pit lane to adjust his car’s setup, a request the team denied.

Pundits like Ralf Schumacher suggest a ‘breach of trust’ has developed. He indicates Verstappen now has limited influence over critical technical decisions. This contributes to the growing tension.

Red Bull management reportedly left Silverstone early after the race. They were also said to be disappointed that Verstappen did not publicly waive his exit clause during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend.

Team Principal Laurent Mekies is reportedly frustrated by Verstappen’s current attitude. Red Bull had previously offered €8 million to buy out the exit clause, an offer Verstappen declined.

Further compounding the situation is the impending departure of Gianpiero Lambiase, Verstappen’s long-time race engineer. Lambiase is set to join McLaren as chief racing officer no later than 2028.

This move is part of a broader exodus of high-profile personnel from Red Bull. The team is now under significant pressure to retain its star driver amidst these developments.

Speculation regarding Verstappen’s future continues to intensify. McLaren has emerged as a frequently mentioned potential destination. His manager, Raymond Vermeulen, is reportedly engaging with other teams.
